Siaya granny commits suicide over church money

A 67-year-old woman committed suicide at Got-Ramogi sub-location in Bondo sub-county for allegedly misplacing Sh50, 000 she has been keeping for the church.

Mary Aoko jumped into Lake Victoria Wath-K’Opondo beach where she drowned and died on Thursday morning.

Confirming the incident to The Standard, Central Yimbo Chief Gordon Opundo said the deceased left her husband in the house on Thursday night and walked straight to the beach where she killed herself.

Before killing herself, Aoko is said to have been restless and never disclosed her destination to the husband as she was leaving the house in the middle of the night.

“The incident was only discovered when some fishermen found her phone and clothes on the lakeshore before they raised alarm,” said the Chief.

He added that members of the public came and mounted a search around that area before they luckily found the body which was stuck in a fishing net a few metres from the lakeshore.

The body has since been moved to Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary to await postmortem as investigations begin.

The administrator took the opportunity to advise members of the public to desist from the habit of taking away their lives whenever they have problems.

“There are alternative ways of solving problems and sharing the problems with people close to you for assistance can help avert such untimely deaths,” advised Opundo.
