Police are in a spot following an increase in livestock theft. Tension was yesterday high at Katani village following several incidents of cattle theft.

Residents have, as a result, accused police officers of laxity. They are also appealing to the county government to replace some village elders, who they suspect of colluding with cattle rustlers.

During a charged security meeting on Wednesday the residents proposed an overhaul of the village elders grouping who work under the Government’s Nyumba Kumi initiative.

Through their spokesman Benjamin Kyalo, the residents said they had information that some of the elders were involved in the recent theft of cattle.

"We have evidence that some of the elders are involved. We want them replaced," said Mr Kyalo.

Mutuku Kaluma, a resident, said he had lost more than 30 cows in two months.

“My homestead is now empty. I have lost all my cows and goats to these criminals. I don’t even know where to start,” Mr Kaluma said.

Peter Baabu, another resident, said he had lost more than 20 cows in three months.  Speaking at the meeting, Mavoko MP Patrick Makau said cattle rustling would not be tolerated.

"We want police to move first and arrest the thieves," said Mr Makau (pictured). He said he had information that the cows were stolen and slaughtered in bushes within the county before being sold at Burma market in Nairobi.

County police boss Samuel Mugusi said police were hunting for the thieves. “I promise you we will catch the thieves," said Mr Mugusi.
