The mother of a man who died a day after he was allegedly beaten in a police cell in Bomet has made an appeal for help to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation George Kinoti.

"Please! Please! Mr Kinoti (DCI), why was my son released unconditionally. If he was guilty of an offence, why didn't they (police) arraign him in court? Why did they release him after he regained consciousness?" she posed.

Danstan Sifuna, 32, succumbed to head injuries he allegedly sustained while being held at the Bomet Central Police Station after he was arrested on claims of being drunk and disorderly.

"On his release, my son had a blood-stained shirt. I inquired what happened to him, fearing he might have been beaten up by thugs. But he explained that he was roughed up the whole night at the police cells," said mother Esther Nasimiyu.

Sifuna succumbed to injuries on Wednesday at Bomet Health Center where his mother rushed him for treatment.

Nasimiyu also appealed to the local police to find and interrogate all the people who were locked in the cell with his son saying before he died.

Sifuna claimed that some of the cellmates beat him up demanding that he gives them cash.

"My son implicated some people who were in the cell with him. He says the suspects were demanding money from him which he did not have. His cries were never responded to by the officers on duty. I need this matter to be thoroughly investigated and the culprits brought to book," she said.

Bomet Central Sub County Police Commander Geoffrey Walumbe has denied knowledge of the incident saying the deceased did not report the beating while leaving the cells.
