Man detained for defiling, impregnating daughter

A man suspected of defiling and impregnating his 17-year-old daughter will be detained for two weeks.

Chief Magistrate Bildad Ochieng’ yesterday ordered the suspect to be held at the Kakamega Police Station to allow police carry out investigations.

The court was told that the suspect defiled the minor on several occasions at their home in Chirobani village, Shinyalyu. The girl became pregnant and eventually gave birth.

Mr Ochieng' noted that police were still waiting for the results of DNA samples, which were taken to the Government Chemist in Kisumu for analysis.

Corporal Jeremiah Sitienei, in a sworn affidavit, told the court that the suspect, the newborn and the complainant had supplied tissue samples to the lab, adding that the results would help to ascertain whether the allegations were true.

“We are investigating a case of defilement/incest where the suspect is said to have impregnated his daughter. The DNA samples have been extracted from the three and the results are expected in a month’s time,” said Corporal Sitienei.

The officer said the suspect was rescued by the area assistant chief from an angry mob that was baying for his blood after word spread that he was the father of his daughter's child.

Sitienei told the court that it was in the man's best interest to remain in police custody, adding that tension was high in the village and police could not guarantee his safety.

The matter will be mentioned on February 14 to establish progress of the investigation.
