The Kenya African National Union (Kanu) will be seeking alliances ahead of the 2022 General Election, Secretary General Nick Salat has said.

Mr Salat told Kanu officials in Nyanza the party was preoccupied with strategies aimed at positioning Baringo Senator and Kanu Chairman Gedion Moi for the presidency.

Salat spoke in Kisumu County yesterday during the burial of Claudio Opondo, husband to Kezia Opondo, a secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"But even as we journey towards this goal, we are asking our loyal supporters and officials to recruit more people to join Kanu now," said Salat.

He asked party leaders, especially officials in the grassroots, to initiate alliances with parties that hold the same views as Kanu's in their electoral turfs.

Opposition front

Salat and other top party leaders stressed that Kanu needed to reach out to other parties to form a joint opposition front that would win the presidency in 2022.

Already, the party has started preparations for the 2022 General Election.

Salat was accompanied by Kanu Executive Director Joseph Towett.

Mr Towett said going forward, they would engage with political parties, especially the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to jump-start talks about forming a coalition.

Salat disclosed that the officials had met with ODM leader Raila Odinga, who was supportive of coalition talks.

"We are still discussing about seeking electoral alliances ahead of the next General Election," Salat said.

He said Kanu was also keen to engage former Vice Presidents Musalia Mudavadi's Amani National Congress (ANC), and Kalonzo Musyoka's Wiper.

Kanu is the oldest party in the country having been started at the dawn of independence in 1963.
