Sergio Aguero has signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him at Manchester City until 2021.

The new deal means City's all-time leading goalscorer will make it 10 years with the Blues when his new deal expires in three years' time.

Aguero, 30, said earlier this year he intended to leave City when his contract expired in 2020, to return to his native Argentina and boyhood club Independiente.

But the forward, who has proved his enduring worth to Pep Guardiola after a difficult start working under the City boss, has committed to another year in England.

Aguero was on £250,000-a-week, but the new deal is understood to put him alongside Kevin De Brune, as City's highest-paid players on around £350,000-a-week.

Argentina striker Aguero scored City's dramatic last-gasp title-winning goal in 2012 in his first season with the club. He has since plundered 204 goals in 299 appearances for the Blues and is set for his 300th appearance.

“This is a superb club,” said Aguero. “We always aim higher. When I first got here, the project fired me up. Every goal we achieved was replaced with a loftier one – that's just my style.

“I really enjoy life in Manchester and I have since day one. The respect and kindness of everyone here helped a lot, and it makes me feel at home.”

Aguero added: “I am happy for this additional year. My idea was being here for 10 years. I’ve been here for seven years, it’s going to be 10 when the contract expires.

"This was the main reason I signed. I’m very happy because they have treated me very well since the first day I got here. I’m very happy about everything that involves the Club, my teammates, the staff and the management team.

“It's true that we've got a lot of young talent, that in the future can make the difference.

"At the same time, the youngsters have quite developed already, like Leroy, Raheem, Bernardo and Gabriel. There are a lot of players, that have got things to improve and learn, but being in this Club you learn and improve faster than anywhere else.

"We have a good team, we need to be focused and if we are at 100%, we have lots of chances to do great things.”

Manchester City director of football, Txiki Begiristain, said: “We are delighted that Sergio is extending his stay at Manchester City.“He has been so important to this Club since his arrival in 2011 and he remains at the forefront of what we are want to achieve in the coming years.

“We are fortunate to have had one of the best strikers in the world at our Club for so many years and I’m sure our supporters will be thrilled with this news."
