Lusaka in Ghana for Annan's send-off

The uncertainty caused by the fuel crisis resulted in last-minute changes on who will represent President Uhuru Kenyatta at the burial of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka yesterday morning departed for Ghana as President Kenyatta's special envoy, swapping places with his National Assembly counterpart Justin Muturi.

After the death of Mr Annan on August 18, the Head of State nominated Mr Muturi to represent him. Annan's burial tomorrow will be attended by leaders from around the globe.

Mr Lusaka was said to have been informed about the changes at the weekend by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“I am already in Accra, Ghana,” Lusaka told The Standard on phone later.

Mr Muturi was understood to have been locked up in a lengthy meeting at State House with the President, Treasury CS Henry Rotich, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, and others in efforts to unlock the stalemate over the high fuel prices.

The delegation the Speaker was leading includes senior Government officials, MPs and senators. Opposition leader Raila Odinga also left the country during the weekend to attend the burial.
