Western Region are this year’s seating volleyball winners in the ongoing national primary school ball Games for learners with disabilities.

They achieved the feat after defeating Nyanza Region 2-1 in a tension-packed match at Kirobon Girls High School on the third day of  the championships in Nakuru, yesterday.

Western won their first set 16-14 before Nyanza made a comeback and won the second 17-15 as the games headed into the deciding third set, which Western struggled in, before achieving a 17-15 victory.

Western also won the netball title with nine points, ahead of Rift Valley, who had seven. Nyanza finished third in the eight-team competition.

In the deaf boys’ volleyball matches at Nakuru Girls, Eastern defeated Nairobi and Rift Valley with an identical 2-0 score in Pool A to qualify for today’s semifinals.

Speaking through an interpreter, Eastern captain Kilonzo Muthui said he was confident of lifting the title although they were not going to underrate any team.

“Despite our qualification into the knockout stages, we’ll not underrate any of our next opponents in the race for the title,” Muthui, who is a Standard Eight Pupil at Mwingi Special School for the Deaf in Kitui County, told Standards Sports.

The Directorate of Special Needs Education Officer Sheilah Lutta appealed for support from well-wishers as a way of supporting and appreciating the players in the current and future editions.

“Such games also give them an opportunity to be exposed and feel appreciated just like other members of the society,” said Lutta.

“This is a good venture because the games form part of the extra-curricular activities.”

In the other Pool A volleyball match, Rift Valley walloped Coast 2-0 at Nakuru Girls High School.

In Pool B, Central overcome Nyanza 1-0 before Western also squeesed a similar victory against North Eastern.

Earlier, Eastern secured a 5-4 victory against Rift Valley in girls’ netball while Nyanza defeated Nairobi 24-0.
