Narok-Maai Mahiu road safe: PS John Omenge

The Government has dismissed reports that the Maai Mahiu-Narok was not safe for motorists.

Mining PS John Omenge said although some sections had been affected by wide cracks, the road was still safe to use.

Mr Omenge said the road was stable and that the damage on certain sections was as a result of washing away of sand from the Suswa hills. "This is normal in flood-prone areas.

After the rains everything will be normal," he said. Speaking after visiting the affected areas, Omenge blamed the road's destruction on environmental degradation.

"Even though the cracks have been caused by floods, residents are also to blame for land over-use," he said.

The PS urged geologists to give accurate information on the state of the road.

"Some reports that the cracks were as a result of volcanic activity are wrong and those giving such information should stop," he said.
