Omar denies he insulted teammate: Harambee Stars player sacked by Bulgarian club for being disrespectful to the country

The first Kenyan to have played in the Bulgarian league denies the accusations.

Kenyan international Aboud Omar has been sacked by his Bulgarian club Slavia Sofia after being accused of insulting his teammates and club coaches.

According to BBC Sports, the decision to terminate the former Tusker and Bandari left back was reached on Thursday after he become violent and disrespectful to the country.

“I decided to remove Aboud Omar from the team and his contractual relations with the club will be suspended under the existing legal order,” Slavia president Ventseslav Stefanov said in a statement.

However, Omar who became the first Kenyan player in the Bulgarian league when he joined them in 2016 from Greek lower tier side Panegialios has told BBC Sport that he did not insult his team-mates and coaches as claimed by the club.

25-year-old left back told BBC Sport there has been conflict between himself and the club over the renewal of his contract.

He was instrumental in helping the seven-time Bulgarian champions qualify for the Europa League a few months later.

However, according to Stefanov whose decision to dismiss Omar was unanimously supported by all Slavia players, they couldn’t tolerate the Kenyan’s cruelty and arrogance anymore.

“For no apparent reason, the player became cruel and arrogant,” Stefanov said.

“He learned the most vulgar phrases in Bulgarian and began to address them to his teammates without exception.

“The impudent Kenyan began to curse everything, related to life in our country and did not try to conceal his dislike for the Bulgarian state at all.”

Omar whose contract was due to expire in June made 60 appearances for Slavia.

Meanwhile, Gor Mahia captain Harun Shakava says he was shocked to score an own goal in their 2-1 defeat to SuperSport United in Wednesday’s night return leg match of the CAF Confederations play-offs in Pretoria.

Despite the defeat, Gor made it to the group stage on away goal rule after beating the South Africans 1-0 in Machakos a fortnight ago.

“It was a deflection and I was shocked to see the ball go into my own net, but as a leader it couldn’t bring me down.

Such things happen in football, but I think I was just unlucky.

“I thank my teammates for the quick response and the fighting spirit,” Shakava told The Standard Sports.

“All the same, I am proud of this generation of players for that historic achievement. We look forward to performing better in the group stages.”

Elsewhere, Fifa has fined the Laos Football Federation $700,000 for sanctioning the illegal transfer of minors.
