The Government has started compensating farmers who will be displaced by the construction of the Sh24 billion Karimenu II Dam in Gatundu North constituency.

The construction will begin as soon as more than 5,000 families who will be affected are compensated.

The first phase of Sh400 million compensation for 118 farmers that began on Tuesday has been completed.

According to the Water Ministry, more than 5,000 families who will be affected by the dam's construction will be compensated.

The project is funded by the central government and the China Exim Bank and is expected to be ready by December 2020.

Speaking while handing over the first tranche of compensation cheques, Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said the dam would give 850,000 Kenyans access to clean water.

The CS promised that the affected families would get full compensation before the project commences and called for patience.
