Chaos erupted in Kisumu town Monday afternoon after a Form Four student was shot in Kondele during the anti-IEBC demos.

Several vehicles were damaged during the confrontation as police tried to control rowdy protesters who were angered by the killing of one of their own.

Kisumu County police boss Titus Yoma, however, could not confirm if the student died from bullet wounds.

Addressing the media, the boy's mother indicated that the student had gone to buy ice cream from a nearby vendor when the incident happened.

“I told him not to go out today because of the protests but he insisted on going to buy ice cream,” said the mother.

NASA supporters started engaging police in running battles early Monday morning in Kisumu. The protests intensified later in the day.

Opposition leaders have been calling on police not to use excessive force on demonstrators out to exercise their democratic right.
