Crime: Man shot dead in wrong identity

NAIROBI, KENYA: A 60-year-old man was on Sunday shot dead by police outside his home in Ngong area after the officers mistook him to be among a group of thugs who had raided a nearby shop.

Francis Gathua, was killed when an officer from Olooluwa police camp who were pursuing thugs said to have broken into a shop near his house shot at him.

Witnesses said the officer aimed a gun at Gathua who was at the robbery scene killing him instantly.

“The man was at the scene where the robbers had broken into a small kiosk and stolen cash. Police from Olooluwa camp came after an alarm was raised but instead ended up killing Mzee Gathua, while the thieves escaped,” said Solomon Mbugua, a witness.

His body was taken to the mortuary as the police continue pursuing the thieves.
