Basketball: Zetech win students derby as Fiba Africa Zone V clubs name teams

Zetech University won their Kenya Basketball Federation men's Premier League tie 76-72 against Kenya College of Accountancy University (KCA-U) at Nyayo Stadium at the weekend.

Reagan Brayan and Faheem Juma contributed 15 points each for Zetech. KCA-U had a game high of 28 points from David Omondi as Auka Awuor added 11. Zetech scored 14-22, 20-13, 15-17, 11-8, 7-7, and 9-5 to carry the day.

Co-op Bank Spartans maintained their good run by beating Trailblazers 81-49. Titus Musembi's 17 points guided his side to victory. Lenson Kisia had 13 for Spartans.

Umoja came from a 30-22 half time trail to edge Thunder 79-77 at the same venue. Umoja were led into the game by Nick Ogoll, Rogers Ombati and Gilbert Otieno. Ogoll scored 33 points, while Ombati had 15, with Otieno adding 12 more. Abel Nson sunk 41 points for Thunder as his teammate Griffin Ligare added 18.

Mercy Wanyama steered women Premier League defending champions Equity Bank to a 84-40 win against Eagle Wings. Wanyama had 21 points, while Winnie Wafula scored 10 for Eagle Wings.

Meanwhile, 20 teams from eight countries have confirmed participation in the 2017 Fiba Africa Zone V Clubs basketball championships to be held in Kampala, Uganda from September 28.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) are hopeful of defending the women's title they won in the last edition in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Likewise, Uganda's City Oilers are sharpening their claws as they hope to defend the men's title.

Kenya will be represented at the regional championships by KPA (men and women), Equity Bank (women) and Co-op Bank (men).

Hosts Uganda have defending champions City Oilers and Betway Power in the men's category, while KCCA and UCU Lady Canons will battle in the women's category.
