A suspected thug was shot dead by police in a botched robbery at Mbiri village, Njukiine Ward.

His two accomplices, however, escaped. Police caught up with the thugs as they tried to break into market stores.

A witness, John Kimotho, said the robbers were involved in a series of shop breaking from about 2am.

“After stealing from one shop, they would move to the next and ransack cash boxes before breaking into a nearby bar where they reportedly threatened the attendant with death unless he surrendered all the cash,” he said.

Kimotho said he was woken up by loud bangs caused by the metal bars the suspects were using to break into the shops since he lives nearby.

Kirinyaga East Sub-county OCPD Hassan Hussein said he was held up in a meeting and would talk to the press later.
