Narrow escape as 48 injured in road crash

At least 48 people have been admitted to hospital after a school bus they were traveling in was involved in a road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway on Friday evening.

Saturday, police said the accident that occurred at Ndara area near Maungu Township belongs to Thingisyo Secondary School in Kambuu trading centre, Taita-Taveta County.

According to the police, six people are in critical condition at the Voi County Referral Hospital where they were rushed after the accident that caused a heavy traffic build up along the highway.

County Police Commander Fred Ochieng’ said the school bus was on private hire and was headed to a wedding in Kwale County when the accident occurred.

The driver, 44-year-old Michael Musyoka lost control of the vehicle as he tried to avoid a head-on collision.

“The vehicle rested on its rear side since the driver was avoiding a head on collision with a vehicle from the opposite direction while at the same time attempting to overtake another vehicle that was moving in the same direction,” said Mr Ochieng’.

He asked motorists to avoid speeding and exercise caution especially during the Easter season.
