The teachers' employer has assured teachers it is committed to honour the 2017/2021 collective bargaining agreement (CBA) signed in October.

A senior official at the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), who was addressing a teacher’s conference in Busia, said they were working round the clock to pay teachers by July 1.

Agatha Murungi from the department of Primary Schools Management was addressing the teachers on behalf of Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia.

"TSC is committed to ensuring teachers get their dues as per the CBA signed last year," said Murungi.

Primary school head teachers drawn from across Western region are meeting for three days in Busia to discuss challenges in their work.

The Government is expected to spend about Sh13.7 billion in the first year. The whole programme is estimated to cost around Sh54 billion. The least paid P1 teacher will take home Sh27,195, up from Sh21,756 per month.

Head teachers were told that they have an integral role to play in the education sector. Murungi urged teachers to uphold high integrity in their respective schools.

The teachers' employer warned teachers against mismanaging resources the national government is channelling to schools. "Teachers have an obligation to manage both human resources and school resources and general infrastructure at the school level," she said.

"We have heard cases of child abuse, sexual offences within our learning institutions, absenteeism, drunkenness by teachers and poor management of school resources. That is why TSC is trying to sensitise teachers on what is required of them," she added.
