The betting and lottery industry in Kenya has suffered a huge blow after the government increased the taxes charged on betting and lottery companies to 50%.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich said that the betting and gaming industry in Kenya has grown in recent times and it needed to be regulated.

“Betting and gaming have become widespread in our society in an environment that is inadequately regulated,” he said.

The CS went on to propose that the taxes be raised from the current 7.5% to a uniform 50%.
