Respect women and instill gender equity and equality.

“If you want something said, ask a man, if you want something done ask a woman,” this are wise sayings from the most powerful lady, prime minister of united kingdom Margaret Thatcher commonly known as the “iron Lady”. The two statements are diverse one states the expression and the other action which positions women as highfliers in everything they do.

All the limitations pertaining women’s participation should stop with immediate effect. The antiquity that relegated women from vying for the top seat/position should be dealt with. In the 21st century, we have women who are enlightened and can do more than the men in various positions either in public or private sector. Prof Olive Mugenda has proved to be an outstanding leader throughout her entire work as the Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University. Indeed Mugenda and other women have proved the saying by Margaret Thatcher that a woman who understands the problems of running a home will be nearer to understand the problems of running a country. Women have portrayed a sign of good governance, integrity, accountability and clarity in their work.

In the coming general elections let us entrust and support women vying for big post like senatorial, or even presidential. Let us share the national cake equally with the inclusion of women in power.

It is regrettable to note that women in our country continue to suffer economically, socially and politically as a result of gender inequality.

It’s high time that women should stand for their rights; they should condemn taboos, beliefs and superstitions which have deterred them from progressing in life. Most of the beliefs like wife inheritance, FGM, ritual cleansing among others should be condemned in the harshest words possible. In the 21st century such beliefs and doctrines lack connotation.

The government should impose severe penalties to those involved in such retrograde and outdated acts.

The government and institutions that upholds gender issues should come on bond and create awareness on the rights of women. Women on the other hand should rise on one agenda “equal rights and representations in the government which is very crucial in our country.

This is the time for women to rise in top seats and prove to men they can. For many years men have taken control of almost all positions in the government and majority of them have embezzled public funds with nothing to point in their places of development.

It’s high time for women to prove wrong a saying by Clare Booth Luce an American author, politician, and a US ambassador who in her study observed that “in politics, women type the letters, lick the stamps, distribute the pamphlets and get out the vote men get elected” this tendency should be condemned and instead women should prove their proficiency.

All the numerous issues affecting girl child ranging from sexual abuse, early marriage, education, labor require efforts by the government, gender activists and women at large to champion the rights of a girl child especially those that are in marginalized and remote communities in Kenya where  the cultural activities that makes women inferior still persists.

Failure to effectively address this pertinent issue on gender concern will mean girls, mothers and women of Kenya remain susceptible, no one will fight for their rights and the quality of their life will be deprived.
