Shock as Kericho woman attempts suicide after killing two sons

NAKURU: Police are holding a 25-year-old woman suspected of killing her two sons on Wednesday morning.

Winny Chepkorir from Kipngosos sub-location in Sotik is alleged to have attempted to commit suicide by drowning herself in a river after killing the children.

Her neighbours at Cheserton village said they woke up only to find one of the body of the boys, a 10-month-old, dangling from a tree near their home.

Kingosos Assistant Chief Denis Chirchir, who led the search for the woman, said they found her almost drowned at a nearby river. The five-year-old boy she was with had already had drowned.

"After discovering the body of one of the son's dangling from a tree, alarm was raised and a search team discovered her drowning with the other son in a nearby river," Mr Chirchir said.

The woman was rescued and rushed to Kapkatet Level 5 Hospital in Bureti.

The chief said the woman had differences with her husband and at the time of the incident she was living in her parents' home.

"The woman has been having problems with her husband and attempts by parents and elders to solve their issues was not successful. We asked her to stay with her parents as a solution was sought," he said.

The administrator said the husband had accused her of engaging in extra-marital affairs.

"The second son that the woman hanged outside their compound was born out of wedlock and the lady may have been facing pressure from her husband," added the administrator.

Locals expressed shock at the incident saying the woman was social with her neighbours.

"We did not expect that she would kill her children over the differences," said one of them.
