Why would a brilliant mind want to join hands with terrorists? This is one question many Kenyans are grappling with after revelations that a University of Nairobi trained lawyer was among the terrorists who attacked Garissa University College on April 2.

Here are some of the brilliant minds whose academic brilliance turned against humanity.

Mohammed Atta

He was an architecture graduate of Cairo University and the Technical University of Hamburg. Unfortunately, he would never live to enjoy the good fruits of education after he took part in the bombing of the twin towers of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Ayman Al-Zawahiri

He took over the reins at Al-Qaeda after the death of Osama Bin laden. Ayman studied medicine at Cairo University and later got a master’s degree in surgery.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (the Underwear Bomber)

The Nigerian-born engineering graduate of the University College of London attempted to detonate explosives hidden in his underwear while on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas day in 2009. The chemical reaction produced a small explosion that only injured him.

Mohammed Emwazi (Jihadi John)

He is thought to be the masked man behind ISIS. He holds a degree in Information Systems from the University of Westminster.

Timothy McVeigh

He was admitted to Bryant & Stratton College to study computer programming. On April 19, 1995, he detonated a truck bomb in front of a government owned building, killing 168 .

Abdirahim Mohamed Abdullahi

He studied law at the University of Nairobi and was among Al-Shabaab men who attacked Garissa University College on April 2.
