Forest evictees told to keep off disputed land

Elgeyo Marakwet: Embobut forest evictees have been warned against purchasing land belonging to the family of a prominent chief in Elgeyo Marakwet County as it is still under dispute.

The family members of the late Chemweno Chebor told the Press in Eldoret yesterday that the 53-acre land has a succession dispute and the matter was still pending in Eldoret High Court.

Julius Chemweno, a son to the deceased and the family spokesperson, revealed that the succession of that parcel of land namely 441 Moiben/Chebara has been in court since 1992.

Contempt of court

“We want to make it clear to the public, and particularly the evictees, not to enter in any transaction as that will amount to contempt of court,” he said.

According to Chemweno, who is the proposed family administrator, the parcel of land in dispute is among the many plots owned by the late Chemweno but it has neither been tilled nor occupied by the family members because of the matter in court.

The piece of land is situated in Kilimani sub-location, Moiben location in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The family’s caution has come in the wake of a suspected transaction by one of the family members, alleged to have sold 30 acres of the land to the Embobut evictees who are in dire need of alternative settlement space.
