Five killed in Vihiga bus accident

Vihiga, Kenya: Five people Wednesday died in a grisly road accident along Majengo-Luanda road in Vihiga County when a bus rolled from the road.

The accident occurred after the bus attempted to avoid running over a pedestrian. It rolled several times and landed into a ditch. 

“When the driver tried to avoid running over a pedestrian one tyre bust and the bus veered off the road and rolled several times killing three on the spot,” Sarah Dancan Vihiga county Police commandant told The Standard.

Three people, a woman and two children died on the spot while two died while being rushed to hospital.

According to Luanda OCS Munuve Bunjollife, the vehicle which belongs to Simba Coach Bus Limited was travelling from Busia to Mombasa and at the time of the accident it was carrying about 50 passengers.

Speaking at the scene of the accident, Vihiga County Deputy Governor Caleb Amaswacha said that the bus was allegedly over speeding.

“The casualties have been taken to Kima, Emuhaya, Kisumu and Mbale Hospitals and we are very sorry for the families of the victim,” the deputy governor said.

The deputy governor urged pedestrians to avoid walking recklessly on the road and also reminded drivers to drive carefully.
