A memorial event in honour of Fast and Furious star Paul Walker was shut down by police when 1,700 drivers turned up.

Twice the expected number of motorists headed to Thorpe Park on Sunday where a fundraiser for the US actor's Reach Out Worldwide charity was being held.

People in the area furious with "boy racers" revving their engines and causing "chaos" took to social media to voice their anger.

Surrey Police shut the entrance gates to the Surrey theme park at 8.30pm - 90 minutes before the event was due to close after an influx of cars caused huge tailbacks, reports Get Surrey .

Organised by Secret Cruises to raise money for Mr Walker's charity and Thorpe Park’s Merlin’s Magic Wand , the event saw motorists travelling from as far a field as Wales to pay their respects on the second anniversary of his death.

Walker, who was 40 when he died, was a passenger in the Porsche that a friend was driving when it hit a pole and burst into flames in California on November 30 2013.

Andre Michaels-Carter, director of Secret Cruises, said: “At the end of the day this whole event was in memory of Paul Walker and it raised a lot of money for our charities, £2,270.
