The dangerous game of terrorism and technology

Kenya: Technology, one of the most popular words in a majority of households might be the solution to what the country is going through. The monster that has claimed many lives and now scares everyone ‘TERRORISM’ is just at the same level in popularity with technology.

International terrorism is changing in ways that may make it more dangerous and difficult to combat.  Despite the fall of the communist bloc, which once provided support to left-wing terrorists, and the resulting reduction in the number of states supporting terrorism, incidents reported around the world have not decreased.

Moreover, terrorist attacks are becoming more lethal: according to a recent report to the US Congress, in the 1990s a terrorist incident was almost 20% more likely to result in death than an incident two decades ago.  Although significant, this is not the only change occurring in international terrorism.  Terrorist groups now have different motivations, organisation, structures and tools. This was a presentation made by a sub-committee on the proliferation of military technology to NATO parliamentary Assembly. This just formed part of the well-researched presentation ever made on terrorism and technology relationship.

The United States Department of Defence has recently released a report on serious cyber-crimes by Russians on their network and that is not the first time that this is happening. A series of the same ranging from phasing, to eves dropping on telephone conversations of the world’s most respected country in the world.

I am sorry if you think I am interested on the security of American's data, No, I am worried by one of the growing hubs in the continent and home of many innovators and aggressive IT gurus, Kenya.

Other than the Chinese who had crammed into a room in Runda to set an attack on our money, which of course was not detected by network monitors but by the alarm of neighbours who might have been disturbed by the population of these guys. The Kenyan government is believed to be most advanced in technology amongst the developing countries, having the best brains and most progressive technologies. The government should ensure the safety of our data and privacy as we are excited about this thing called technology that is a double edge sword.

However, the best in this industry are young men and women working in the private sector while others who are unfortunate to secure good jobs are used to do the dirty work for terrorists for money. The government cannot employ everyone but the most important thing is to have the best in the market. To be on top of the game.

For anyone who thinks safety starts with you, then you should add some few lines to make it, "Safety starts with your technology".
