Alive and kicking ‘dead’ Kakamega man is welcomed back home

Body being exhumed

A family had to exhume a body they had mistakenly buried after their real son returned home.

In a bizarre case of mistaken identity, Zachariah Juma returned home after he heard news of his death and burial.

Juma, it is claimed, had left home for Eldoret in search of greener pastures and had not contacted any of his family members.

Speaking to The Nairobian, Julius Kaula (Juma’s father) said they assumed their son was dead after he disappeared for two months and no one had heard from him.

He said neighbours found a body dumped in the river that they claimed was his son’s.

“My son was last seen at a drinking joint in Kakamega town, but never returned home. We collected a body, but we didn’t verify who exactly it was. We have since learnt that the body was Fred Kaula’s and not my son’s. I am happy he is back home,” he said.

The area chief Malick Maina said he instructed the family to exhume the body.

“We had to get a court order to allow the family to exhume the body after establishing that they buried a wrong body. The body will now be taken back to Kakamega County Mortuary until further arrangements for its burial is made,” he said. Juma had to undergo a cleansing ceremony to welcome him home.
