Turkana MPs demand tough action on insecurity

A section of Turkana MPs have demanded immediate action on insecurity in the region. Led by Turkana South MP James Lomenen, the leaders lamented that the problem was getting out of hand.

Speaking in Lodwar town Friday, the MP said:"We have talked about the insecurity issues for too long. The government should provide security to the people at the volatile borders. What happened in Kajiado Central is just the beginning and should be a lesson."

He was accompanied by MPs Nicholas Ng'ikor (Turkana East), Daniel Nanok (Turkana West) and Protus Akuja (Loima).

He added that security is a constitutional right and that President Uhuru Kenyatta's mandate is to provide it.

"The lack of political will from the executive is a deliberate way to continue marginalising us so that they can come for our oil," said the legislator.

Mr Lomenen said the people of Turkana need security first before they can deal with other issues.

On his part, Ng'ikor said if the government is not ready to sort out the insecurity problem, they should step down for the opposition.

"If the government will not provide security, they should know that there is a government in waiting," said Mr Ng'ikor.

Nanok lamented that the insecurity in Turkana was not only an internal problem but also external.

"We have lost lives yet the government is quiet," said Mr Nanok.

Over the past two months, more than 50 people have been killed by armed raiders along the volatile borders.
