Businessman killed outside Diani police station

Diani, Kenya: A businessman was shot dead on Wednesday evening by two gunmen at Dodoma village in Diani town, Kwale County.

Sources told the Standard that Francis Ayuka was shot at around 8pm after he refused to part with cash and instead shouted at the gunmen.

Dodoma area is directly opposite Diani police station and with a nearby road block it’s not clear how the gunmen could attack and vanish from the scene without police pursuing them.

Confirming the incident Msambweni OCPD Joseph Omijah said on Thursday that detectives are investigating the incident.

"The two attackers arrived on a motorbike and ordered the businessman to give cash. He resisted and that is when they shot him,'' said Omijah.

He noted that Ayuka succumbed to bullet injuries as he was being rushed to Msambweni Hospital.

"He was hit by one bullet at his rib which went through to the lungs and died as he was being rushed to the hospital," he added.

According to the OCPD the gunmen rode away to Mwamanga area after the incident.

"We are still pursuing them. They stole two mobile phones from the deceased after he refused to give them money," he further said.

Business people who include Ukunda branch business community chairman Richard Onsongo have condemned the incident.

The chairperson urged the national government to provide security in the area for a conducive business environment.

"Cases of business people and locals being attacked by gunmen in this area is increasing and we have lost many lives," he said.

Onsongo said citizens have a right to be protected by their government.

"Before it goes further let us be protected because we are worried especially when locals and businessmen can be gunned down at such a time when everyone is awake. We want security to be beefed up in this area by ensuring security patrols," he stated.
