Five people dead, 10 injured in Isiolo road crash

Isiolo, Kenya: At least five people have died, scores injured and about 100 livestock killed when a truck heading to Isiolo town hit a herd of camels at Gambella Bridge.

The truck, belonging to an Isiolo businessman Ali Mahad was moving towards Isiolo from Wajir where it had taken fresh farm produce three days earlier.

The truck was ferrying about 150 goats and sheep and 30 passengers when the crash occurred at Gambella, about 15 km east of Isiolo town on Monday evening.

On Tuesday, Isiolo County Assembly majority leader Adan Ali who was at the scene confirmed that five people died, two at the scene and three others at Isiolo Level Four Hospital.

''I was at the scene and what I saw was grisly. We have lost five people but I hear that two more have succumbed to their injuries,'' said Ali, of URP party.

The County CID officer Peter Ndumbi said initial report he received included two people killed, five injured and scores of livestock killed.

On Tuesday, Mr Ali said five people were buried at Tullu Roba Muslim cemetery while two others were reported to have succumbed to their injuries.

The truck which was ferrying livestock hit a caravan of camels at poorly constructed bridge at Gambella where locals said 80 goats and sheep which were on board died on spot while seven camels which were crossing the road also died.

The injured included four students—a girl and three boys from Modogashe who were reporting back for school for the first term. Mr Ali said the students, all out of danger are admitted at Isiolo Level Four Hospital.
