Life isn't that serious!-Dorah Mwabili

Achieving Woman

Dorah Mwabili;kenyan actress;poetHow did you land yourself into acting?

I prepared myself for this career ever since I was in primary school. I participated in public speaking, music and drama festivals in primary and high school. These worked in my favour.

You have graced our screens for two years now. What has changed in your life?

Life has become better, I can pay my bills. There is also the attention I get when I board a matatu. I get numerous invites to events.

What has your role taught you about yourself?

I’m an administrator in one of the shows in a local station. This role has taught me humility and being of service to others. I have also learnt that life is 'never that serious' and to associate myself with the right people.

What role would you die for to play it?

I would like to be a lead actor or something close to that. I would like a role that would allow me to do more, and preferably in a movie.

Before the screens came calling...

I was a trained teacher and taught for a year. My father was a teacher and at one point, he wanted someone to take it up after he retired so that had to be my elder sister and I.

Since it was not my thing, I told him I could not go on. That was when I took up a journalism course, which is in line with my acting career in so many ways.

Your years in a teaching class, they are not going to waste, are they?

I do not feel I wasted the years because I taught for a year. I use the skills I got to influence on this other end.

I am as well involved in teaching through motivating and empowering young people. That is similar to teaching.

We only see you on TV, there is a lot we do not know about you... any misconception people have about you?

No misconceptions whatsoever. People do not know I can sing. I write poetry through my blog, I have not updated it for a while now.

I utilise my journalism education by being part of the media team in my church.

There are so many comedy shows in all TV stations. Do you think this the only way to achieve 60 per cent coverage of local content?

I feel it is about creating content that has a target audience. It all depends with the target audience and I believe a good concept is all that matters to get the viewers glued...though I also feel there is need to create other genres. We have the people in the industry, we need resources.

What beauty secrets do you abide by?

I always carry water in a bottle everywhere I go. I do detox and every day before I go to bed, I wipe make-up off my face and moisturise it.

What is your advice to people in the acting industry?

All they need to do is love what they do. Where there is passion, all is possible. They should also never forget to pray and to follow their hearts.
