Nyeri court finds Police impostor Joshua Waiganjo guilty of impersonation and fraud

NAYERI COUNTY: Police impostor Joshua Waiganjo was Wednesday found guilty of five counts of impersonation and fraud by a Nyeri court.

However, despite the court establishing his guilt, Waiganjo could not be convicted after he denied any previous criminal records. The prosecutor, Inspector Stanselous Mwangi told the court that Waiganjo had two previous criminal records.

He said Waiganjo had served two years in a Murang'a prison in 1998 and was fined Sh2,000 four years later after he was found guilty of impersonating a police officer.

Chief Magistrate Wilbroda Juma Wednesday issued summons for the officer tasked with identifying criminal records to appear before the court so that the court could query Waiganjo's previous records.

Waiganjo was charged before the Nyeri court that in October 2008 he pretended to be a senior General Service Unit officer to fraudulently obtained money from three Nyeri residents, pretending he would help recruit them into the Administration police service.

The court was told that Waiganjo obtained Sh50,000 from Daniel Kago and Sh100, 000 from James Wambugu in the guise that he would help recruit their sons. Juma said sentencing would have to wait until the court has heard a mini trial on the matter of the criminal records.
