Tragedy as five family members die in Kibera fire

Five people were Thursday night killed in a fire incident in Kibera slums, Nairobi.

Three others are in critical condition at the Kenyatta National Hospital after the tragedy that started from one of the houses. Police say the fire started at about 10pm burning over 100 houses. The incident left hundreds homeless and emergency service providers were Friday on the ground to help the victims. Police said the victims were members of the same family and had been sleeping when the fire broke out.

According to Kilimani OCPD Peter Katam, they suspect an electrical fault caused the fire.

"They were burnt beyond recognition and we suspect they are three adults and two children," said Katam.

He added the bodies were discovered long after the fire had been contained.

Residents complained there was no response from the fire engines.
