Tears as friends, family of lecturer killed by radical youth in Mombasa view body

Tears flowed freely as friends relatives mourned the lecturer who was stabbed to death by rampaging youths in Mombasa on Sunday.

Relatives of the Mombasa Technical Institute lecturer David Munga gathered at the Pandya Memorial Hospital in the town yesterday where the body was transferred to from the Coast Province General Hospital mortuary.

Some mourners had to be carried away after they were overcome by grief on viewing the body.

Mr Munga was attacked outside the institute at about 11am by marauding youths avenging the death of murder suspect Hassan Guti who was killed by armed men on a motorbike on Saturday.

FOUR CHILDREN

The youth pounced on passersby soon after burying Guti at the Kikowani Muslim Cemetery that is located near the polytechnic.

His family members recounted the last moments of the lecturer's life as women wailed uncontrollably after being overcome by grief.

Guti's wife Josephine Jilani said he left their Likoni home at 6.45 am for the first morning Sunday service at Winners Chapel in Tudor on Mombasa island so he could perform some duties at the college.

"He told me he would go to his workplace to prepare for examination to be administered the following day (Monday). He did not have his breakfast that morning," Jilani said.

The widow said the news about her husband's death reached her at 2.30 pm on Sunday when she was on the way to Likoni after attending a Sunday service at the same church.

He leaves behind four children.

Victims of the Sunday attack said youths armed with machetes, clubs, swords and knives went on the rampage after burying their colleague and attacked everyone in sight.
