10-day peace drive to end insecurity in Baringo

Baringo senator Gideon Moi

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and Pokot elders have agreed to launch a peace caravan following escalating insecurity in the county.

The senator held numerous consultative forums with elders, professionals and current Baringo leaders to find a solution to the problem.

Gideon, who is also chairman of the powerful Senate Energy committee, said dialogue between the feuding communities ought to be given a chance.

"I condemn all acts of cattle rustling and banditry. This retrogressive act should be stopped and all of us should play our part in ending it," he said.

TARGETED AREAS

Leaders who met with Gideon agreed to have five out of the nine administrative wards in Tiaty included in the programme, with targeted areas being Mukutani, Loyeya, Katubgura of Tangulbei/Korossi Ward, Tobulen, Ameyen of Silale ward, Sereton, Katikit of Ribkwo Ward, Tugumoi, Lomuge of Koloa and Kapau of Tirioko Ward.

The 10-day peace drive, according to the organisers, is expected to kick off on November 3 and will be attended by political and community leaders specifically drawn from the three major warring communities of Pokot, Illchamus and Tugen.

“The tension mounting up at Kapedo is not about livestock theft but pure boundary-related conflict and that is why as leaders we ask those in charge of our borders to move with urgency and decide either way,” said Gideon.

Peter Lokoromoi from Silale said those who attacked the General Service Unit convoy killing three officers before making away with their official firearms and more than 400 rounds of ammunition were criminals and should be treated as such.

He said elders were pursuing the bandits with a view to convincing them to surrender the stolen State property.

“It should not be assumed that everybody from Pokot land is a cattle rustler. Those engaging in banditry should be treated as criminals,” said Lokoromoi. The senator has already asked the survey department to visit affected areas and identify original administrative boundaries.
