Kajiado; Kenya: The County Assembly of Kajiado has set up a committee to investigate claims of threats against a ward representative over a land scandal.

The committee will investigate text messages and phone calls allegedly made by a senior officer at the Ministry of Agriculture warning Kitengela/Sholinke Ward Representative Daniel Kanchori to keep off the land.

This follows a Motion tabled by Mr Kanchori at the assembly last Thursday, indicating that his life was in danger and urging the Government to intervene.

Speaker Johnson Osoi said the committee put in place by the assembly will start its work as soon as possible.

He said he was going through the Motion and will advise the team accordingly.

Kanchori claimed a senior officer at the Ministry of Agriculture called him last week warning him to keep off the Government land situated at the heart of Kitengela town or “be eliminated”.

“I was called by the Government officer who I know and whose number I have in my mobile phone. After a short conversation he hanged up and wrote a text that read: Keep off the Government land,’’ said the MCA.

standing firm

He said he recorded a statement at the Kitengela Police Station before having a meeting with the County Security Committee chaired by County Commissioner Kello Harsama.

“I am being threatened for standing firm and stopping these people from grabbing this piece of land that has now been converted to be the only stadium in Kitengela,’’ said Kanchori.

He said he will not be intimidated by the people who claim to be private developers but are out to grab public land in the county. The piece of land in question has been at the centre of an ownership controversy between the county government and the ministry. The land was earlier owned by the ministry and was expected to change ownership to the Kajiado County Government after devolution.

Kajiado Governor David Nkedianye told The Standard that since the ministry was devolved, he expected all the facilities to be handed over to his government.

“We are amazed that even after having a new Constitution that devolved some ministries, senior officers in Nairobi still want to grab some of the facilities,’’ said Nkedianye.

erecting stalls

Four months ago, a man was shot and injured when protesters destroyed a perimeter wall constructed by a private developer around the land. Last week, Kanchori said the county government had set aside Sh5 million to fence the land, which has now been turned into a sporting facility.

He said the decision was reached after some people invaded the land again and started erecting stalls in a move to transform it into a market.

“We will not allow individuals to take what belongs to the public,’’ he said.
