Fire destroys property in Gikomba and Kawangware

A huge fire broke out in Gikomba market on Tuesday night and destroyed property worth millions of shillings.

The fire is said to have started in one stall and spread fast to others in the busy area.

Police said they could not ascertain the cause of the fire or the real value of the damage.

Another fire destroyed property in Kawangware 46.

Police said the fire, caused by a transformer exploding, spread to nearby houses and destroyed property of unknown value.

The fire raged on until yesterday morning, with residents saying fire engines never responded to emergencies in the area.

But police said the engines were engaged in the fire in Gikomba and another one in Kenyatta University.

Two killed

Meanwhile, two suspected robbers were on Wednesday night shot dead by police in a botched robbery in Kiamumbi.

The suspects had shot and wounded the owner of a house they were raiding before they were repulsed.

Police said the two were in the company of four others and had raided a private home when the alarm was raised.

"They had made a hole in the perimeter wall when people in the house noticed a commotion and raised the alarm," police said.
