President Uhuru Kenyatta donates a posho mill to Mazuki youth group in Kibera

Kibera, Kenya: The President had pledged to buy the posho mill for the group during his recent visit to the area where he inspected the slum upgrading works that is spearheaded by the National Youth Service in collaboration with the area's youth.

"The president is impressed by the work the group is doing to improve living conditions in their neighbourhood. He was pleased to support the group in enabling them own a posho mill," said Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru, while presenting it on behalf of the President.

The on-going slum upgrading works in Kibera is a key to the social transformation and empowerment of the youth which is one of the 7-Pledges of the Jubilee Government to create transformative youth empowerment in Kenya.

Under the 5-Point Vision Plan, NYS has engaged 500 servicemen/women in Slum Civil Works in Kibera where they are working with the local community youth to transform them into competitive and employable youth.

"The key success factor for the Kibera transformation will be to ensure that it is sustainable and is owned by the community. With the community youth gaining financial independence from the income they are earning every day, this will guarantee own-ability of the projects thus working towards long-term sustainability," said Waiguru.

Waiguru said in order to realize the vision of catalyzing transformative youth empowerment, the National Service will be organized into 9 units ; Integrated Dam Construction, Integrated Road Construction, Vector Control, Slums Civil Works and Public Environment, Huduma Kitchens, Traffic Control, Public Security and Agriculture.

The 22,000 NYS recruits will be expected to mentor and work with more than 200,000 of their neighbours in nation-building work under the different units.

During the unveiling of the new transformed NYS, President Uhuru highlighted numerous other changes to the body and reaffirmed the government's commitment to developing, supporting and empowering the youth, emphasizing that the country's development depends on the youth who represent nearly half of the population.
