Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa: Name the druglords

Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa, has given all administrators in the area two weeks to furnish him with the names of drug barons and dens.

Marwa ordered the administrators to make the names available to enable the government deal with the drug problem in the county.

The commissioner said that drug abuse greatly contributed to insecurity, adding that the youth were particularly vulnerable to criminal gangs dealing in drugs.

The call comes in the wake of the destruction of a ship carrying drugs that was nabbed at the coast. The destruction of the vessel was witnessed by President Kenyatta and the latest move by the commissioner appears to be aimed at sustaining the momentum in the fight against drugs at the Coast.

Following the impounding and subsequent destruction of the ship, President Kenyatta issued a directive to the police and other relevant agencies to ensure the Kenyan coast was not turned into a transit hub by drug kingpins.

Addressing the press in his office yesterday after a meeting with sub-chiefs, chiefs and sub-county administrators, Marwa identified Kisauni as the most affected area, disclosing that three quarters of drugs supplied in Mombasa ended up in the area.

Last week, police nabbed bhang with an estimated street value of Sh1 million stashed in a Probox in Kisauni.

“By next week Wednesday, I want all names of drug dealers in Mombasa. We cannot be running after the users while the suppliers and barons in the trade are walking free,” said Marwa.

Marwa revealed that there have been numerous reports of muggings in Kisauni, where a gang of youths has been robbing residents even in broad daylight to finance their drug habit. Other drug hotspots identified by Marwa are Kibarani, Mishomoroni and Likoni. The commissioner also directed that all bars near learning institutions, churches and mosques be closed.
