Boy killed in herders' gun fight in Baragoi

Baragoi, Kenya: A 14-year-old boy has succumbed to bullet injuries and a man is nursing critical injuries following a confrontation in Baragoi between the Samburu and Turkana herders.

According to Kenya Red Cross coordinator for Samburu County Gitonga Mugambi, the boy was shot on the back and the bullet passed through his stomach. Gitonga said Red Cross volunteers rushed to the scene in Natiti Village and took the two casualties to Baragoi Sub-county hospital where they were referred to Maralal Hospital; 106km away.

"The bullet came out through the stomach causing severe injury. He was not able to make it to Maralal Hospital," said Gitonga adding that the second casualty, a 29-year-old man is in  critical condition and is being treated at Maralal Hospital.

The confrontation, according to Samburu County Police Commandant Patrick Wambane, began after one of the herders shot his colleague in the grazing field. No animal was stolen in the confrontation. Local MCA Lawrence Lorunyei, urged county leaders to address the conflict and establish the cause.
