You take responsibility for succeeding and you do so at your own terms, or so you thought. The real scenario though, is not as simplistic as this.
Have you, or someone you know, ever found yourself in the position where you work hard and there is finally an opening for the position that you have been eyeing? Then, shockingly, the position is either awarded to someone else or the organisation sources externally.
In some cases, people realise that while they expected their bosses or supervisors to have their best interests at heart and intercede or champion their cause, they never even thought about them. In other cases, their bosses did think about them but since they were delivering value and would rather not lose an employee, they did not act as champions for them.
Companies and bosses may not set out to stifle their staff and hesitate to grow them in their careers. However, at the rate the world is changing, there’s a certain level of comfort that comes with staying in one’s comfort zone.
Instead of trusting someone higher up in the organisation to advance your agenda, make it your sole agenda to talk about where you want your career to go and what initiatives you would like to be involved in. And make sure you are talking to the right people who are in charge of these decisions, even if that is not your boss.
Call it intuition or an internal compass; this is the feeling that guides you when making decisions. At the end of the day, you know that work gives you that exciting feeling and wouldn’t it be great if we could all wake up, every morning gunning to go to work. There’s a healthy intersection of work and fun and it will not come knocking at your door, you have to carry out your own research and work at it.
Evaluate the recognition and results that your work is getting you – frequently. If you continuously find yourself having to slow down, then maybe you should find a place where your creative license is not restricted and where you can go full steam ahead.
