Leicester City wants to sign former Manchester United player

Leicester City are set for talks with German international goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler.

The Foxes have met the £3million release clause in Zieler’s contract at Hannover 96, following their relegation from the Bundesliga.

Claudio Ranieri is keen to beef up his squad this summer, with Leicester set for the Champions League, and sees Zieler as a viable alternative to Kasper Schmeichel.

Zieler, 27, has previous experience of England, having spent five years with Manchester United, however he never made a first-team appearance for the Red Devils.

He did appear twice on loan for Northampton Town during the 2008-09 season however, before returning to his homeland with Hannover in 2010.

Since then he has made 199 appearances for the Lower Saxony club, as well as five appearances for his country.

Hannover have confirmed that the clause in Zieler’s contract has been exercised, and are resigned to his departure this summer.

“We have always been aware that Ron, with his outstanding qualities, belongs in a No.1 league” declared sporting director Martin Bader.

“We wish him all the best for his future. He will always be welcome in Hannover."

Bundesliga side Mainz had also been keen on Zieler, wanting to take him to the Coface Arena this summer to replace new Liverpool stopper Loris Karius.

But the Premier League winners have stolen a march on interested parties and Zieler is travelling to the East Midlands for talks over a move to join Ranieri’s men, before a potential medical.
