Kenya Cup title to end ahead of Impala RFC clash with Kabras Sugar RFC-Rugby

A seven-year drought for a Kenya Cup title is about to come to an end for Impala RFC as the ten-time champions face-off with Kabras Sugar RFC in a highly anticipated final match at the Impala Club, today.

This will be the third meeting between the two teams this season with each team winning one apiece. Impala beat Kabras 31-14 in the first leg but the Millers turned tables on the Sarries to win the return leg 25-13.

But with Impala having beaten defending champions Kenya Commercial Bank 8-7 and Kabras shocking Kenya Harlequin 19-15 to eliminate the Cup favourites in last weekend’s semi-finals, rugby enthusiasts should be braced up for yet another scintillating clash.

Quins will lock horns with KCB in a third place play-offs. Both teams are in contention to mount historic seasons, with each team trending towards a different record-while Impala will be eyeing their first title since 2009, Kabras will be aiming to win their maiden title on their second attempt after losing 27-3 to KCB in the final last year.

And with both teams having a similar style of play, Impala coaching director Fred Ollows expects a difficult final match.

“Impala and Kabras don’t play a very different type of rugby from each other. Kabras have got a few quite heavy guys and have a lot of players who have got x-factors. That’s the same thing you will find at Impala,” said Ollows.

“I think it’s more of what will happen on the day itself and both teams will be keen to win this.”

But for Impala captain Duncan Ekasi, whoever minimises mistakes, will carry the day.

“Kabras’ game is direct more so like KCB, we need to play a high intensity game and in their zone. Of course they will trouble us, but I believe we are ready and whoever makes least mistakes will carry the day,” said Ekasi.

“We are excited but anxious at the same time. It has been long since we last won the Cup, but we must stay grounded and remain focused through-out the match.”

Just like Ollows, coach Mike Bishop is excited to face the hosts in the final. “The boys have been dreaming for this far for quite a while and they are excited to be in the final,” he said.
