KORIR GROWLS TO VICTORY: Nandi Bears golfer wins KCB tourney in Nakuru

Nandi Bears golfer Johnson Korir beat a team 200 golfers to emerge the overall winner of the Second leg of the 2016 Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) golf tournament at the par 72 Nakuru course on Saturday.

Playing off handicap 24, Korir, who barely a fortnight ago clinched the Legends golf honour at Muthaiga posted a sterling 45 stableford points to clinch the trophy.

Braving the relatively scorching conditions, Korir carded 22 points in the first nine and shot 23 points back to seal the day’s win in awesome fashion.

“I had a wonderful flight with some of the best golfers from Nakuru. I ran on intense pressure two weeks ago to win the Legends Golf in Muthaiga. And the practice I have had since then has given me this win today as I never stopped improving on my skills after the victory”, said Korir.

The day-long 18-holes stableford event sponsored by Kenya Commercial Bank attracted golfers from the home club, Nyanza, Naivasha, Machakos, Njoro, Nandi, Kericho and Kisii.

Fr A. Kipkemei, with 39 points, was the runner-up, followed by Fr. Paul Miringu, who was third, a point behind.

Lady winner was home golfer Esther McCarthy with 35 points. Bernard Kandie finished on 38 points. Peter Kwambai took the Guest prize on 36 points.

Schoolboy Melvin Steinmann was the best junior winner on 37 points.

KCB’s Group Finance Director Samuel Munyua said the KCB corporate golf tour is geared at empowering amateur golfers with golfing skills.

The Third leg will be held at the Eldoret Golf Club next month. At the seaside Mombasa Golf Course, club Chairman Peter Kimnaga proved his skills to fellow golfers after emerging the overall division winner of the club’s March 2016 title.

Playing off handicap 12, Kimanga posted a sterling 74 nett to claim the Trophy in the day long tournament that attracted 125 golfers.

“I have played well today, the course was a bit challenging, but it was a nice game,” said Kimanga.

Club mate Mark Mbua playing off handicap 16 was the Division two winner on a score of 69 nett and taking the third Division award was also a club mate, handicap 25 Charles Kahariri who had a score of 77 nett.

The Ladies Medal was won by Nyali’s handicap 19 Kellen Weku on 68 nett, while Nakuru’s handicap 33 Ruth Kooro was second on 73 nett and the Club’s handicap 24 Mary Kandu on 80 nett was third.
