FKF Elections Board insists they will conduct elections on Wednesday despite a financial glitch that led them request for a further Sh12.28million from the Sports Ministry.

The Board is also embroiled in a classic case reminiscent to the Tower of Babel fable after a member, David Mereka, cast doubts on the feasibility of the poll.

But yesterday, Board member professor Edwin Wamukoya insisted the Ministry has promised to shell out Sh5 million to conduct the national elections on Wednesday.

“We shall conduct elections on Wednesday. It is true the ministry has promised Sh5 million. It is not enough but even if we leave behind debts, we must conclude the elections,” professor Wamukoya said.

In the scathing letter, which he also gave notice of his intention to resign Mereka hit out at the Board chairman lawyer Donald Kipkorir accusing him of decided aloofness and poor leadership.

The board, which received Sh20 million from the government for these elections and another Sh10million accrued from registration fees from aspirants, has run out of cash — a scenario that now threatens to derail the final process.

The Board wrote to the Sports Ministry on February 4 asking for Sh5,623,600 to pay the Institute of Education in Democracy, Sh1,315,000 and a further Sh2,960,125 for Elections Board Secretariat and Sh3,568,000 for Board allowances.

A source at the Ministry has confirmed the request had been received and is still under discussion. Besides the financial problems, the Elections Board boardroom has seen a melting pot of partisanship.
