Next Arsenal manager: Five candidates likely to replace Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger has hinted he could leave Arsenal in two years' time.

At today's Gunners AGM, the Frenchman talked about working until the last day of his contract, which runs out at the end of next season.

Wenger said: "I am resolute to commit absolutely until the last day of my contract to bring back big success to this club, and leave as well one day in a position where it can do even better when I leave.

"That is for me very important that I leave the club in the shape that the guy who comes after me can do better.

"The responsibility on my shoulders is much bigger. I know what it means for people. I know how sad people are when we don't do well, I know how sad people are when we lose a game."

But who could replace him in the Emirates dugout? Here we take a look at five potential candidates...

1. Pep Guardiola

Rumour has it the former Barcelona boss will leave Bayern Munich at the end of this season when his contract expires - but would he be willing to sit on his hands for a year to wait for Wenger to depart the Emirates?

It certainly seems a good fit on paper.

Guardiola's love for total football is shared by the Gunners faithful, and his penchant for winning trophies also wouldn't go a miss.

Manchester City may have something to say about it however, should they decide to part ways with Manuel Pellegrini.

Odds: 11/1

2. Ronald Koeman

As with Mauricio Pochettino before him, you would expect the Dutchman to move on from Southampton at some point in the not too distant future.

That is with no disrespect to Saints, for whom Koeman has done a sterling job, maintaining a Champions League challenge for much of last term.

Should the Gunners come calling, however, you would think Koeman would find it difficult not to join his predecessor in north London.

Odds: 10/1

3. Roberto Martinez

Everton boss Martinez is very highly regarded at the Emirates.

Players love playing under him, he speaks well in the media, and his style of football would fit Arsenal like a hand in a glove.

A difficult campaign last season followed a stellar first term with the Toffees, and the blue half of Merseyside have enjoyed a decent start this time around.

His apparent ability to develop young players, personified in a certain John Stones, could also be something the Emirates hierarchy are drawn towards.

Odds: 16/1

4. Remi Garde

Currently on a break from football - could the ex-Gunners midfielder rock up in the Emirates dugout?

His spell at Arsenal was solid if unspectacular, making 43 appearances during his three years in north London.

However, it is as a manager where Garde has shown his talents, winning more than half of his 117 matches in charge of Ligue 1 outfit Lyon before deciding to step down.

He won a French cup during his three-year tenure, and his spell clearly had an effect, with Lyon sitting two points from second spot so far this term, in a league dominated by PSG.

Odds: 25/1

5. Patrick Vieira

Possibly a little more left field - but an appointment that would surely be met with open arms by Arsenal fans.

Vieira arrived at Highbury on the same day as Garde, but with considerably more fanfare, and his playing days had a considerably bigger impact too.

An undoubted legend during his nine seasons with the club, Vieira has now gone into coaching, making waves with the reserves at big-spending Manchester City.

He has earned plaudits for his work with younger players, and a move back to his spiritual home would almost certainly prove too tempting to ignore.
