Volleyball: Nairobi Volleyball League winner to take home double amount of national league

The inaugural Nairobi Volleyball League (NVL) has received a Sh10.2 million worth of sponsorship from various cooperates.

  The league which will be run by Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Nairobi branch will see winners pocket sh 200,000 with runner’s up going home with sh 100,000 while the third ranked team will walk away with sh 50,000.

This cash prize makes the tournament the most paid volleyball league winner double the national league winner’s prize money.

The league that is set for May to October has acquired sponsorships from Coca Cola Company Limited on sh5m, APA Insurance, Mount Kenya University) and Nairobi Water Company on sh 1million each, Kenya Pipeline Corporation (KPC) and the longtime partners Savlon, who have increased their kitty  to sh 1.3 million from sh 890,000.

Nairobi branch Secretary General Michael Njoroge said the league will be played in a period of six months to pave way for league teams to prepare for the national playoff.

“This league is set to introduce more action in the local volleyball arena. The national League is normally played monthly, thus matches of this new league will be staged two weeks later.

The league targets s both national sides and estate teams with national league sides to compete in the first tier with the later participating in the second division in both men and women.

“Teams will not have to wait all month to compete. We will have action in Nairobi every two weeks after the national league legs,” said Njoroge, who turns out for league side Co-operative Bank.
