New champs emerge: St John’s Kaloleni and Narok Boys hockey teams scoop top honours

Defending champions Shimba Hills of Kwale County,    Mombasa region and Nairobi’s Upper Hill retained the girls and boys basketball title as the Brookside National Secondary Schools First Term games came to an end in Mombasa.

As the curtains fell yesterday, new winners were born in boys and girls hockey after St John’s Kaloleni and Narok were crowned champions.

Narok pulled a major upset after they ended Friends School Kamusinga four-year dominance in the final.

However, Shimba Hills won won the title three times in a row and for keeps thus a new trophy has to be bought to be competed afresh in next year.

Coached Philip Onyango, thumped to newcomers Parkland Arya 74-44 in the final at the Shimo La Tewa High.

Parklands coached by Godfrey Mwaloma started off determined but Shimba Hills relaxed the game to put the score at 48-23 at half time.

Beryline Akoth bagged 15 points for Shimba Hills before Everlyn Oketch added nine more. Melvin Iminza and Vivian Wakini had 12 and nine points respectively for Arya.

In play-offs, Tigoi hit Loreto Limuru 72-33 to qualify to join Shimba Hills and Arya for East and Central Africa Secondary Schools games to be held in August in Tanzania.

In boys basketball final, Upper Hill recaptured the trophy dismissing Mangu High of Aberdare 67-33.

Fred Malaki and Martin Mugabi hit 16 and eight respectively for Upper Hill while Derrick Olang and Allan Waria had 13 and two for Mangu.

In boy’s basketball play-off, Kamusinga beat St Georges of Mombasa region 79-64.

Over at girls hockey, St John’s Kaloleni of Mombasa region made history as the first ever team from the region to have won the title.

They hit Kapkolei  Girls from Nakuru region 5-0 at Shanzu Teachers Training College.

Coached by former Mombasa Sports Club player Austin Otieno, St John’s scored a hat-trick through Florence Mwaka with Agnes Raisi and Veronica William scoring a goal each.

In girls hockey play-off, the immediate former champions Sinyolo of Lake region hit St Joseph Kibwezi of Metropolitan 3-0.

In boys hockey final, Emmanuel Mure scored lone goal to silence Kamusinga 1-0.

The boys hockey play-off, saw Maseno hit Thomas Fish of Metropolitan region 3-1 to settle for third position.

In rugby final, giant killers St Peters Mumias from Nzoia region beat Maseno 15-13.

Coached by Shitati Livondo, St Peters were 5-0 down at half time. Maseno added another try in the second half.

Albert Obuya and Brian Juma touched down once each with Juma (Brian) scoring a penalty for 13 points. St Peters replied through two tries by Horus Alela and Blastus Juma with Carlos Magara scoring a conversion. Magara added another drop-kick for the win.
