Security beefed up along Kuria-Transmara border

Security along the Kuria-Transmara border has been beefed up following increased cases of cattle rustling.

The heightened security vigilance comes after police repulsed heavily armed cattle rustlers who had attacked villages in Kuria.

Deputy County Commissioner Wesley Koech said the raiders tried to gain entry into homesteads but were repulsed.

Last week, one person was shot dead by unknown people while grazing animals at the clash-torn boundary that pits the Siria in Transmara West against the Nyabasi in Kuria.

The two communities are locked in a land tussle with either side laying claim to over 200 acres of arable and fertile land.

But because they have been denied access to the land by the Government pending resolution of the feud, each side has been targeting the livestock of those who graze on the disputed land.

TENSION HIGH

The disputed land cuts across the two counties from Geitageita in Migori to Taragai at the Tanzania border.

Mr Koech said police had managed to calm down the situation, although tension still remained high.

Attempts by the two sides to hold a joint peace meeting last week hit a snag after the police were tipped of planned retaliatory attacks from Trans Mara where one death was reported.

“The armed rustlers are  playing a hide  and seek game with the security personnel but we hope they will be arrested,” said a resident, Mwita Bhoke.
