KRA frustrate Ulinzi: Sony and Chemelil draw as KCB held by City Stars

Stubborn Kenya Revenue Authority forced a 0-0 draw with Ulinzi Stars in an evenly contested Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru yesterday.

Both teams played well but the tax collectors were the better side in the first half while the home team dominated the second. Goals for the visitors should have come in the first half but steady goalkeeping by veteran Francis Ochieng saved the day for Ulinzi.

Striker Steve Waruru should have given Ulinzi a magical lead in the 37th minute but his shot was deflected for a fruitless corner kick with KRA custodian Philip Odhiambo already beaten.

Waruru almost shook the net in the 47th minute after cutting through the KRA defence line but Ivan Anguyo was too fast for him before he could face Ochieng between the posts.

Six minutes later, striker Kevin Simiyu was on the mark again at the left flank but his volley went over the bar.

Ulinzi Coach Salim Ali made several changes benching Waruru and Kevin Simiyu for Elvis Agwanda and Job Muhati, but it failed to change the match tempo.

Missed target

On their part, KRA missed out to claim the lead in the 78th minute when striker Geoffrey Omusula blasted over the bar after being put through by Douglas Okumu with custodian Ochieng’ (Francis) well beaten.

Two minutes later striker Joseph Mulume also wasted a golden opportunity when he blasted wide. KRA coach Ken Kenyatta was a contented man with the match results.

“Although my boys failed to utilise chances that came our way, we’ll improve before our next match this weekend,” Kenyatta told Feverpitch.

KRA host Muhoroni Youth at City Stadium on Saturday.

Ulinzi team manager David Mwangi was not impressed with the results.

“We didn’t take our chances,” he said.

Sugar Millers derby

In Awendo, Sony Sugar’s were held to a barren draw by Chemelil Sugar. Sony’s coach Zedekiah Otieno was satisfied with the scoreline and heaped praises on his charges saying he was not disappointing.

“Both teams played very well and I must say the result was good owing to the fact that we have never won against Chemelil here at Awendo for the last many seasons. That is why I can say the result wasgood,” said Zico.

Chemelil Sugar coach Mike Muiruri said his team played well and expects better performances in future encounters as they seek to stake their claim on the KPL this season.

In Nairobi, City Stars drew 1-1 with KCB in a match playted at the City Stadium yesterday.

KCB dominated the match but were forced to wait until the 58th munite to get the lead through Hedmond Mauda after brilliant work by Paul Mungai Kiongera.

The lead was cancelled fives minutes later by Uganda import George Abege after combining well with compatriot Jimmy Bagaye.

KCB goalkeeper Sammy Okinda stretched to the full length of his body to deny George Abege his second.

Former Gor Mahia forward Paul Kiongera and Francis Ouma was a major threat for most party of the match with City Stars’ goalkeeper Majani making numerous saves.
