Exploit potential in education, Former President Daniel Moi says

Kenya: Former President Daniel Moi has asked youths to take education more seriously by taking advantage of the many available learning institutions established across the country.

Speaking at the launch of Kabarak University's Online Centre, the retired President encouraged young people to remain aggressive and focused in their pursuit of knowledge.

He said the Government and private sector have worked extra hard to ensure easy access to institutions of higher learning.

"During our time, it was next to impossible for learners to find space in the few places of higher education. Today, they are all over and, therefore, nobody should be left behind uneducated," said Mr Moi.

Moi said through the online system of education, the university had begun a new journey to take quality learning to the rest of the world, especially the digital generation.

"This centre will remain available and its doors wide open to young people to do research and expand their learning skills and knowledge," he said.

Moi said it was his dream to one day establish a world-class university that could bring hope and transform millions of lives globally.

The former President, who is also Kabarak University's chancellor, was presented with a portrait of himself as a gift from the university's management team, which appreciated his endless efforts to ensure education was available to all, regardless of background.

Moi said commissioning of the online centre marked a significant step for the university, saying learners across the globe would have an opportunity to interact directly with their lecturers from the comfort of their homes.

FOREIGNERS' CENTRE

Kabarak University Vice Chancellor Jones Kaleli said Kenyans from all walks of life should emulate what the former President did while in office and even in his retirement.

The VC said Kenyan leaders must learn from Moi, who sacrificed his earthly wealth to establish Kabarak Educational Centre, now home to even foreigners.

"What President Moi has done overwhelms many and that is why Kenyans must appreciate his love for education by taking it seriously," said Prof Kaleli.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to preside over the university's 10th graduation ceremony on Friday and launch the online programme.
